The Institution That Launched HATRIQA Has Been Ranked No.1 Globally For The 10th Year In A Row

University College London’s Faculty of Education and Society (IOE) has once again been ranked first for education in the 2023 QS World University Rankings by Subject. 

The news marks a decade of leadership in the field having been ranked top for education as a subject each year since 2014 by the QS World University Rankings, and comes as IOE celebrates 120 years of excellence with important work spanning education, psychology, culture and social research. 

The news is of particular interest to the HATRIQA team as our very own Directory of Education, Mark Bailey, is a teaching fellow in English at UCL’s IOE. 

Mark noted: “It’s an honour to be part of the Institute of Education, which has played a huge role in the development of both my career and the incubation of HATRIQA.  IOE staff have helped us develop our football-led pedagogy and the IOE’s EDUCATE programme at their Knowledge Lab is where we honed the idea and made significant developments in the quality of our products and the academic robustness of our learning materials. I’m incredibly proud that we’ve been able to develop our education business surrounded by the very best in world education.”

UCL President and Provost, Dr Michael Spence, said of the news that: “IOE is a remarkable centre of research and teaching not only in education, but also in the whole social context that impacts the development of young people. It also offers first-class teacher education. 

“We are immensely proud that this distinctive combination has been recognised as leading the field globally for a record-breaking tenth year in a row. This is work of the highest quality that has profound impact for good in classrooms and communities around the world.”

UCL also ranks top for architecture and in the top 10 globally for a range of other topics including archaeology, anthropology, pharmacy and biological sciences. 

IOE Director and Dean, Professor Li Wei, commented further: “To be ranked first in the world in any single year is a tremendous achievement. To be ranked first for 10 years in a row is truly outstanding.

“To have our work, what it stands for and its impact recognized in this way is significant for the faculty, for UCL and for the UK in terms of its higher education offering – I am incredibly proud and appreciative.

“This performance reflects the commitment of all IOE colleagues, academic and the professional services staff who support their work, and our students, as well as the impact of our international network of alumni as they put their learning into practice in their workplaces and communities.”

The IOE and partners established UCL EDUCATE to redress the lack of research evidence in the educational technology (EdTech) sector, matching business innovators such as HATRIQA with academic research to ensure EdTech delivers effective learning, and in the process becoming the world’s leading research accelerator for EdTech ventures.

As well as taking part in EDUCATE, HATRIQA also received support from UCL Innovation & Enterprise at BaseKX, UCL’s entrepreneurship hub in Kings Cross which hosts the University’s most promising startups.
